  • Report of RT Frontier Event (January 18, 2014)

On January 18 2014, as part of a monthly GRA program, the students of Sugano laboratory organized the monthly RT Frontier event at
Building 29‐8, Waseda University (RT Frontier). As in the previous cases, the event was targeted for all age groups with the purpose of
introducing the past and the present robotic technologies, and to foster interest within young minds. The total number of participants
for the January event was exactly 38.
Basically, the contents of the event can be divided into two separate categories. With the aim of fostering early interest in kids towards robotics, we organized an ‘assembling a toy robot’ event. Overall, there were seven participants for this event. The second and major part of the program was the Robot demonstration. We introduced the participants to the various robots in Sugano Laboratory. Overall, the event went smoothly showing good responses from the participants as suggested by the results of the questionnaire.

 

  • Technical internship in ST Microelectronics Japan.

(Takanishi laboratory WB group, 2nd year PhD, Sarah Cosentino)

During January and February, I will carry on an internship in ST Microelectronics. Starting an internship during a PhD course in a technical major adds a significant amount of overhead on your already quite busy schedule, and requires a strong motivation. But an internship normally helps you learn more about a career field, before becoming part of the corporate reality full‐time, giving you the possibility to test and compare the pros and cons of academic and industrial frameworks and to decide which one fits you better.
I am very satisfied with my internship in STMicroelectronics. I am involved in a challenging project, and I have quite a tight schedule, at the end of which I should see my product working: this helps me stay focused and motivated. Also, STMicroelectronics employees are kind and very helpful, and this allowed me to dramatically improve my technical skills in such a short period!
I would definitely recommend both the internship experience and the company itself.
